Press article

Friday, May 28th, 2010

I am delighted to see that Parson Willimott’s Cornish Sketchbook has got even more press coverage.

On Tuesday 11 May it was featured by The Western Morning News. That should help sell a few more copies to help raise funds to restore the stained glass windows in the Church.

I was also very happy to see the Design get a nice comment from Christine Edwards in the article.

“We are all very pleased with the high quality of the design and printing, which gives an authentic feel to the book.”

Photo Gallery

Thursday, May 13th, 2010

Another demonstration of what Word Press can do simply and easily. This time I have used images of Redruth and created a photo gallery. If you click on any of the images you will be taken to its own page.

The only downside is that you have to use the Back button on your web browsers to go back to the gallery. That will be my next task to look at that!

Embedding Video

Murdoch Day 2009, Redruth

As part of my on-going training programme and to learn more about Word Press and how it can be utilised, both for my customers and also for myself, this is demonstrating putting video into a blog.

The video was uploaded to You Tube, once an account was set up, there are various links to the video especially from Facebook.

The video is not meant to be of a professional standard. I had gone down to see the parade and was so inspired I just had to get out my old video camera out and start filming. I had no tripod and the sound leaves a lot to be desired. But if was just fun to showcase what hard work had gone into the parade.

The importance of good branding

Tuesday, May 11th, 2010

Did anyone watch the new BBC programme last night? High Street Dreams.

It was very interesting to watch how The Singh family and Roland and Miranda Ballard were advised on how to get their product on the shelves of two of our top supermarkets.

What I particularly liked was the importance they placed on getting the branding of the packaging right. Top agencies were approached to come up with good designs and these were used when they conducted market research in a large supermarket. Feedback was gained not only on the product but also on the design of the packaging.

A good result and both products are going to be on our supermarket shelves soon.

Looking forward to the next one. If you missed it watch again on the iplayer for one week only.

Website Quality Guidelines

Thursday, May 6th, 2010

This third post taken from Google Webmaster recommendations.

They advise that bad tricks can have a negative affect on your place in search engines.

Design/build your website for users, not search engines. Good quality content is the best way to improve your site ranking.

Good quality links improve your website, so people find what they are looking for.

Don’t participate in link farms, unauthorised computer programs.

Make sure your text is visible, ie don’t use white text on a white background so that no-one can read it.

Don’t duplicate content or websites, use re-directs instead.

Don’t use cloaking – this shows a different content than what you actually see on the screen. In other words including html text when a Flash file has been used.

As mentioned previously, this information has been extracted from Google Webmaster Tools to give you a helpful insight. Thanks Google.

Technical Website Guidelines

Wednesday, May 5th, 2010

Following on from the tips taken from Google Webmaster Tools on design guidelines, this is a selection of the technical stuff. Hopefully written in plain english!

  • If you have a Content Management System, make sure the search engines can still crawl and find them.
  • Test your site in different browsers so that it appears correctly.
  • Keep an eye on how long each page takes to load. Pages that load quickly create a better user experience.
  • Avoid using too many fancy features such as JavaScript, cookies, session IDs, frames, DHTML, or Flash as the search engine spiders may not find everything.

These are just a few brief outlines, the rest is very technical and intended for Web Developers.

Website Design Guidelines

Tuesday, May 4th, 2010

Google are extremely helpful in guiding people on what makes a good website, and if you follow these guidelines it will increase your page rank.
This information has been extracted from their Google Webmaster Tools page

  • Have an easy navigation system, where all pages can be accessed
  • Each subject should have its own page, with well written copy that contains useful information
  • Think about the words that people will type into a search engine, then use those words in your copy.
  • Use text instead of images wherever you can.
  • Don’t embed text inside an image in order to use the correct typeface, as search engines won’t be able to read it.
  • Also you cannot enlarge embedded text, so that is not good for anyone with eyesight problems.
  • Give every image an “alt” tag that is a good accurate description.
  • Every page needs a Title tag that is also a good accurate description – this is what appears at the top of your brower.
  • Check you don’t have any broken links.
  • Don’t have more than 100 links to a page.
