Listening to Customers

Monday, June 28th, 2010

I visited Lanhydrock House last Saturday – what a beautiful house and grounds.

The drive leading to Lanhydrock House

But this blog is not just about this picturesque house. No it is about listening to customers. I have been around other historic old houses in Cornwall and Lanhydrock exceeds the others, even with a second visit. Is it because it is the grandest? Not sure, but one thing I do know is how interesting it is, so many rooms are open. They make a real effort to listen to their visitors and implement requests.

Well worth a visit but I think we all need to listen to our customers – or potential customers. So what do you want from a Graphic Designer? Please tell me, either leave a comment or go to my contact page and leave a message.

Designing a Logo

Thursday, June 24th, 2010

Why does it cost so much to design a logo ?

To demonstrate the process involved here is how I came up with the current logo.

My original logo, (designed in 2004) combined two of my favourite typefaces, with the colours Cyan and Magenta to reflect my print background. I then changed the colour scheme in 2008 to reflect my surroundings of the sea and beach, and the typeface for the word “graphics”.

Last year I decided it needed updating, to give a contemporary feel – but where to start? Here are some of my initial ideas …

I couldn’t decide between using a script typeface or a san serif for “Hooper”, but I used the typeface Trebuchet for the word “graphics”. This is a web safe font and will give a consistent look across all media. I liked the idea of turquoise and dark grey for a colour scheme.

But how about trying different colours? Something bright and vibrant …
Hooper Graphics logo idea 4or perhaps purple and grey?
Hooper Graphics logo idea 5I quite liked this design – so did a bit more development work on it. I extended the “p” so that it lined up with the bottom of the “p” in graphics and tried Pink and Green.

Hooper Graphics logo development workI do really like this. But – what does it say about me? Does it reflect the design services that Hooper Graphics offer? More work needed -
Hooper Graphics logo development workI do like the Purple and Green – the “swish” is meant to reflect my love of watercolour painting.

At most stages I sought the advice of friends, family and fellow professionals – this essential but informal Market Research really helps to see if people understand what you are trying to say. So in the end, although I liked the “swish” it was removed in the final result.

All these steps take time but I think it is worth it, does the final result look better than the first idea? Feedback is always appreciated.

Next step how to implement it . . .

Going back to my birthplace

Tuesday, June 22nd, 2010

In case you were not aware I am very excited about moving into Pool Innovation Centre and it is possible to see where I was born from the offices on the top floor.

Pool Innovation Centre is a striking building with a high quality environmental specification that meets full BREEAM* Excellence. It is going to be great working in this new state of the art office environment amongst others who wish to capitalise on the excellence of the facilities.

I have met several of the other new tenants, there is an real buzz and excitement about moving in. Being in this positive environment with other people in a similar field, not only helps the creative process but encourages collaborative working among fellow professionals. This can only benefit the service we offer our clients.

Pool Innovation Centre

I am going to be one of the first tenants to move into the Formation Zone and will be given business support to help the business grow. Pool Innovation Centre is being run by The University of Plymouth following their successful model in Plymouth.

Additional benefits include use of a dedicated facilitated meeting space, reception service and a faster internet connection. These technological advances will help propel the business forward and allow Hooper Graphics to compete nationally.

* BREEAM (BRE Environmental Assessment Method) is the leading and most widely used environmental assessment method for buildings. It sets the standard for best practice in sustainable design and has become the de facto measure used to describe a building’s environmental performance.

Nice new signs

Friday, June 18th, 2010

I am loving the new signs that my local hostelry The Trefusis Arms has put up.

The Trefusis Arms, Redruth

Not sure how well you can see the signs in this night shot but here is how the pub looks now.

The Trefusis Arms

Of course a lovely blue sky does help. My main point though, is what a difference really good signage can make to a business.

These signs have been hand painted, the main pub sign has been faithfully reproduced from the previous sign. But the others have been given a slightly new look which I think reflects the pub very well.

Very nice Doug and Jenny.

Moving out

Friday, June 11th, 2010

I am very excited as the countdown to my move in Pool Innovation Centre continues.

So I am feeling quite sad (well perhaps not that sad!) as I move out of my office at Forth Kegyn. It doesn’t seem five minutes ago that Annicka and myself were busy painting the office walls white and making the office look nice. Actually it was nearly 18 months ago.

But it is onwards and upwards and a different set of neighbours. Having met some of them it is exciting – with people involved with it systems, web development, on-line marketing, event management and film production – I can feel the positive vibes already!

How far we have come

Thursday, June 10th, 2010

Whilst sorting through my old paperwork I came across a print out from an article written by Tony Karp of TLC Systems Corp on 31 December 2002.

He is talking about what is web publishing and he says that it is not a TV show.

… the web is very limited in what you can show. And it will be a long time before the web can handle the kind of sound and motion you see on TV.

Not sure how long the iPlayer has been in use, but certainly in just 8 years it has become the norm for some people to watch their TV programmes on-line.

We have come a long way haven’t we!

Keeping up to date

Monday, June 7th, 2010

You will often find us web designers recommending that you keep the content of your website fresh but what about everything else?

Christmas comes early

This sign is currently being displayed at my local B&Q Car Park. Now as it is currently June and the sign is shining,  I can’t believe they are getting ready for Christmas this early.

It is not the only sign in the car park but it does send out a confusing message, and is also missing an important marketing opportunity. It should be saying what a super selection of bedding plants is currently in store.
