Business Cards with QR code

Tuesday, April 19th, 2011

In my previous blog on having a QR code on your business card, I said I needed to get my own business cards printed – well they have arrived!

Business card with QR code

They are printed on an uncoated paper stock from a sustainable force.

Have you noticed these codes in various places? I saw them whilst walking around Trevarno the other day, they are attached to posts in various places around the gardens.

I can’t wait to try them out at my next networking session, which is tomorrow morning at Tregenna Castle Hotel.

Carbon Neutral Paper

Monday, April 18th, 2011

or Carbon Balanced Paper – proving the paper can be good for the environment.

Paper has had a bad press over recent years, with accusations of it being bad for the environment, but the industry has been working hard to become one of the most sustainable industries around.

My friends at St Austell Printing Company has sent me details of the latest initiative by Howard Smith Paper. They have a range of paper which has been offset by the World Land Trust, making it carbon neutral. So as Howard Smith state

Paper is one of the most sustainable forms of communication available.

Good feedback on Condurro Book

Friday, April 15th, 2011

I have had some really good feedback about the Condurro Book that Girlguiding Cornwall produced about their Campsite. Jane, Chairman of the Condurro Committee, tells me that she is having a lot of letters and cards coming in congratulating them on the project.

Condurro Book

I have now added it to my portfolio of work, and I would certainly recommend having a gloss lamination for the cover of any similar books, and special thanks to St Austell Printing Company for their support in this project.

Adding a QR Code to your Business Card

Tuesday, April 5th, 2011

I hear the new buzz is about having a QR code on your business card.

When meeting someone instead of handing over your business card to a person you meet, if they have a smartphone they simply scan the qr code via their phone and have all your details in an instant.

qr code

What do you think? Of course as a Graphic Designer I think the design of your business card tells you so much about yourself, but on the other hand how many of us have a drawer stuffed full of business cards that we never look at.

I found a really good Code Generator that includes all the information you would have on a business card.

So I am off to get some more business cards printed, although I may play safe and have some with and some without it!

Condurro Book Launch

Wednesday, March 9th, 2011

Last night was the official launch of the Book – The Condurro Story 1939–2010, produced by Girlguiding Cornwall to record the history of their campsite at Condurro.

Condurro Book Launch

The book was produced by the Committee responsible for Condurro, along with Senior Section Guides from the Falmouth and Penryn area.

The content was gathered from Girlguiding Cornwall Archive’s, The Cornish Studies Library as well as recording personal memories of happy times spent at the campsite. A cd-rom has also been produced to accompany the book, where more of these memories can be heard.

Jane Bennett, Jane Hooper and Hilary Bracegirdle

Jane Bennett was the overall project manager and the project was given financial support from The Young Roots part of the Heritage Lottery Fund. This has enabled a high quality final product to be produced and certainly I felt privileged to be part of recording the history of such a special place.

Watching Condurro book roll off the presses

Monday, February 28th, 2011

Over the last 18 months I have been involved with a large project that Girlguiding Cornwall has been undertaking to record the history of their campsite at Condurro.

The project has had funding from The Lottery Heritage Fund and has grown out of being just a small idea to a wonderful 48 page full colour book.

It was decided it would be a good project for some of the Senior Section Guides to become involved with, and with help from various organisations, have recorded the history of the campsite since it first opened, with personal memories, old photographs from the Cornish Studies Library, including a visit from Lady Baden Powell.

Part of the project included a visit to St Austell Printing Company to watch the pages roll of the printing press. Jon Hart, from St Austell Printing Company gave an extensive tour of their works, explaining the processes as we went.

Receipt Books

Wednesday, February 23rd, 2011

West Cornwall Business Networking Club recently asked me to design their Receipt Books. This group meets once a week at the beautifully located Tregenna Castle Hotel overlooking St Ives for a Networking Breakfast.

I attend on a regular basis and they are a friendly club, which makes getting up early and driving to St Ives for Breakfast worthwhile!

WCBC Receipt Book

Sue and Emily, who run the Club, felt they needed professional designed and printed Receipt Books and they wanted the design to reflect the location. The sun has a dual purpose, one to reflect sunny St Ives, but also it gives an indication of the friendly welcome that you will receive.

Come along if you are free – every Wednesday 7.45pm at Tregenna Castle Hotel, St Ives.

Visit to St Ives Printers, Roche

Thursday, November 11th, 2010

This year’s Accommodation Guide for VisitCornwall has all been complete and this year I went along to St Ives Printers at Roche to watch the pages roll off the press.

Pages from Cornwall Accommodation Guide 2011

It wasn’t just a jaunt, the idea was to check everything was alright but it was great fun. Having worked in various printers over the years I must admit I love the sound of the presses rolling.

It is a big print run on the Accommodation Guide so it was printed on the web presses at St Ives, gosh what massive machines they are.

So lets hope lots of tourists flock into Cornwall next year.
