Basic Search Engine Optimisation

Tuesday, November 1st, 2011

There have been a lot of changes with how Google ranks websites nowadays, but somethings just don’t change and here are some simple guidelines.

  • Content, content, content — in other words nothing replaces good content.
  • Each page of your website should be about one subject or topic. You can then tailor your keywords to that page and use them for the title of the page as well as the heading. Then these words should be sprinkled through the content, but not in a way that sacrifices readability.
  • These are some basics and it is worth spending time on these, or if you are struggling, give me a call and let me help.
  • Relevant keywords need to be within the first 90 characters after the heading.
  • Whenever you link to this page, don’t use the words “click here” with the link, use the keywords as part of the link instead. For example: Looking for a web designer in Cornwall?
  • Get links back to your website, the more links the better! This is why social media is having an impact on Google page ranking. If you link to your website pages from places like Facebook; Twitter and LinkedIn, it will raise your own profile and hopefully get lots of visitors.
  • Simple Facebook tip — don’t put all of the information on your Facebook page, just add a teaser, then link to a page on your website with the rest of the information. This tip can work for Twitter and LinkedIn as well, but just make sure the link goes to the right place and the content is relevant, otherwise if they leave the page quickly, it will work against you.
  • and lastly, but never least, Design. Google like a well-designed website. (Talk to me about this one!)

It is worth spending time on thinking about content and keywords at the beginning of the website process, if you need any help then give me a call and we can chat it over.

But remember Google are quite simply wanting people to find the information they need using their search engine, quickly and simply.

Improve local results on Google

Thursday, August 11th, 2011

Here is a really good article I found about how to be featured on Google search results for local businesses.

Using Google maps or places is a really good, cost effective way to promote your website to your local community, without costing you the earth. In fact it just the time it takes to set it up. But read the article for more information.

100% Bounce Rate

Friday, July 1st, 2011

If you have a Flash website then 100% Bounce Rate can at first glance look alarming but actually its not. Let me explain.

Graphic of Bounce Rate

First of all, what is Bounce Rate? This is a term used in website analytics, it shows the percentage of visitors to your website that leave without clicking on another link within the website. So a 100% Bounce Rate mean visitors find your website and then leave straight away, not good.

Except if it a Flash website any links stay within the website and won’t be counted because you are actually staying on the same web page. The time people are on a page, etc can only be measured once you go onto another page.

So on my own Flash website, set up to demonstrate how Flash can be used and using my .com domain name, has a 100% Bounce Rate, but that is not so bad after all. I do love Flash but realistically a whole website done in Flash is probably only for large global names.

However if that happened on my usual website I would be very very worried.

How Google tailor their search engine results

Thursday, March 24th, 2011

Google personalise their search engine results according to the websites you have visited and what you have searched for before.

I have noticed an increase in this recently. I had been searching for Hotels in Paris and looking at Eurostar deals, not only did I then get emails from the likes of Trip Advisor, Thomson’s related to this, but when I was on Facebook various adverts came up with different deals.

Now this is could be quite helpful if it means you get the best deal but if you are searching for where your business appears on search engines you could be getting a misleading result.

Channel Computing has written a really good article entitled “You are not really on page 1 of Google“, they explain it in more detail and also what you can do to avoid it, worth a read.

Email Scam

Wednesday, March 23rd, 2011

I have got used to the daily emails from various banks telling me someone has accessed my account and I need to “click here” to correct it, even the begging letters from Africa – but this is a new one.

The subject on the email was “Expiring Registration” and it related to my domain name hoopergraphics.com – which incidentally is a my Portfolio as a Flash website.

domain name scam

So I checked with 123-reg, who I manage all my domains, and www.hoopergraphics.com was not due for renewal. So I assumed it was an email scam to get me to transfer my domain to them.

But I then went back and read the email properly – turns out it was for  Search Engine Registration for 1 year! It does state I am under no obligation to pay the amount, it is not an invoice and it is just a courtesy reminder and they also provide a link to unsubscribe.

However I am not too happy about their warning, which states if I don’t pay the money people may find it difficult to locate me on search engines, and I am concerned that people may just click and pay up without realising what they are doing. Unethical search engine optimisation techniques I feel – I know some really good people based in Cornwall, so no way am I going to pay someone from America to do it!

Domain name advice from Google

Monday, March 21st, 2011

Interesting video from Google on choosing a domain name.

It seems they are changing the way they rank websites and how it uses keywords in the domain name. It used to help if you had your keywords in the domain name. For example Redruthwebdesigner.co.uk would rank higher than hoopergraphics.co.uk if searching for “web designer”. This video shows that they have changed the importance they place on the domain name and a snappy name could actually help your business in the longer term.

I think this is a good change of policy, be interesting to see how it works in practice.

Successful website

Wednesday, March 16th, 2011

A few weeks ago I did a website for Green Clearance Company, they specialise in house clearance, as well as office and garden clearance and I was delighted when it got picked up on Google within a week.

I have just heard from Ed who tells me he has had good feedback from friends and friendly about the website, but more importantly it secured them two clearance jobs.

This is an excellent result and very pleased.

Found on Google

Wednesday, February 16th, 2011

I am delighted to report that even those The Green Clearance Company website has only been live for one week, it has been found and indexed on Google.

This has been achieved by the search engine optimisation best practice rules that Hooper Graphics follow, combined with the advice that I gave to Ed and Bonnie at The Green Clearance Company. The best results are always achieved if you work in partnership together.

Of course appearing higher on Google pages for specific keywords will take a little longer and need to be monitored, finding out what people are searching for, where they are coming from etc, but it is a good start.

So don’t forget to check out their website if you are looking for a house clearance company in Cornwall.

Top search engine results

Friday, January 7th, 2011

I have just had an email from Rachael at One & All School of Motoring who has been getting some good results on searching on Google for her driving school – here is what she said.

Just thought you’d like to hear that I’ve been getting quite a few website enquiries lately.  When asked where they found me the comment is coming back “you come up top on the searches everywhere” So basically, thank you!!!!!!!!

Rachael at the Driving Wheel

This is really good news, Rachael is an excellent driving instructor and I am delighted that Hooper Graphics has helped people to find her.

Keeping Website content up to date

Tuesday, August 10th, 2010

It is important to keep your website up to date – not just for the sake of Google and search engine optimisation, but perhaps more importantly for the sake of your customers.

Here is a something I came across – they shall remain annoymous.

I was walking past a shop and saw a special offer – I was impressed that looked good, but not wishing to buy on impulse thought I would go home and think about it.

When I got home I wasn’t sure if I had remembered correctly – so I thought I would double check on their website. It does say on their home page

Stay updated with our news and special offers … come back and visit regularly

So I was quite confident I could find out the information – sadly nothing on the home page, and nothing on their special offers page.

Their special offers relate to October and November as we are currently in August I can only assume they haven’t kept their website up to date.

Shame that.
