100% Bounce Rate

Friday, July 1st, 2011

If you have a Flash website then 100% Bounce Rate can at first glance look alarming but actually its not. Let me explain.

Graphic of Bounce Rate

First of all, what is Bounce Rate? This is a term used in website analytics, it shows the percentage of visitors to your website that leave without clicking on another link within the website. So a 100% Bounce Rate mean visitors find your website and then leave straight away, not good.

Except if it a Flash website any links stay within the website and won’t be counted because you are actually staying on the same web page. The time people are on a page, etc can only be measured once you go onto another page.

So on my own Flash website, set up to demonstrate how Flash can be used and using my .com domain name, has a 100% Bounce Rate, but that is not so bad after all. I do love Flash but realistically a whole website done in Flash is probably only for large global names.

However if that happened on my usual website I would be very very worried.

Website requirements

Friday, May 27th, 2011

In order to continue offering my customers what they need I am conducting some market research via Facebook on what are the top factors people consider when having a new website.

Today there are a lot of cheaper options being offering on the internet, with word press templates etc but is there a big demand for it? Or do you feel a little disappointed that, whilst it is a cheap option, in the end you don’t get what you want.

I like to offer a personalised service that meets your marketing requirements, but perhaps price is what concerns people the most at the moment.

Web hosting explained

Wednesday, April 13th, 2011

Briefly

Each website has its files stored on a web server, your domain name points to this web server, so that when people click on your url the files are displayed.

You do not need to have your website hosted by the same people that you purchase your domain from, it is entirely up to you where you host your website, however you do need to change the “nameservers”.

What is a nameserver, this is explained, along with other terms used in regard to web hosting.

Nameserver

Your nameserver simply points people to where your website is stored. The information is stored with your domain name, within a password controlled area. If you move your web hosting this information needs to be changed, it is a relatively easy task, but if you are unsure, whoever is hosting your website may help you.

Web Space

This is the amount of physical storage on the web server that is allocated for you to store your files. The amount of space required will depend on the amount and type of files that you need for your website. Small websites do not require very much, however large websites with databases video and audio files will require more space.

Bandwidth

This is a monthly allocation and it relates to the amount of traffic that your website receives. Again this will depend on your website, and large websites will need a large bandwidth otherwise the website will slow up.

Email Accounts

The number of email accounts you need will depend on how many staff or people require their own personalised address, but you will require at least one. Email forwarding can usually be set up to forward a specific email address, that is related to your domain name, to your own personal email.

Secure Hosting

If need website with secure hosting, or a secure certificate, this will ensure sensitive data is store correctly. Although this will increase the cost of your hosting it is particularly importantly for eCommerce websites that store credit card transactions.

Databases

If your website needs any sort of database in order to function, and this includes Content Management Systems, Contact Forms, Shopping Carts etc then this may well cost extra. You need to check with your web host.

Customer Support

Hosting firms offer different levels of support, which can be email, phone, via their website, and it is worth checking what support is offered for each package.

New Website for Mercator English Language School

Monday, March 28th, 2011

Mercator English Language School run by Dr Mersedeh Proctor and based in St Austell had waited a long time for an update for their website and it has finally gone live. It uses WordPress as a Content Management System, this makes it expandable so extra functionality and items can be added at a later date.

Within a day of the new website going live, improved search engine results were recorded.

Successful website

A few weeks ago I did a website for Green Clearance Company, they specialise in house clearance, as well as office and garden clearance and I was delighted when it got picked up on Google within a week.

I have just heard from Ed who tells me he has had good feedback from friends and friendly about the website, but more importantly it secured them two clearance jobs.

This is an excellent result and very pleased.

The website for Green Clearance Company, designed and built by Hooper Graphics, has just gone live.

I think this is a brilliant idea, they aim to re-home, reuse and recycle everything possible from each clearance undertaken, so it is really green.

Green-Clearance Company

We often throw away items that are perfectly usable, we just don’t want them anymore. They take a wide range of items from furniture to electrical items, carpets, shop fittings.

Frustrating Website

Monday, January 10th, 2011

Any website should contain a few basic MUSTs, as far as I am concerned

  • 1. Phone No
  • 2. Email

and if shown

  • 3. Correct working hours

Sounds simple doesn’t it.

stairlift

Unfortunately over the Christmas period I discovered a website that didn’t have that information correct.

My Mother-in-Law’s stairlift broke down, she phoned her contact number and there was no reply, we went on to the website phoned the number given but also no reply.

Tremorvah home page

We eventually found the opening hours (under Stairlift), according to the website the only day they were closed was Christmas Day, so we tried the email address that was on it. We didn’t get any response on any of it.

Tremorvah contact details

Eventually on 4th January we managed to speak to someone on the phone, who said the phone number was incorrect. So it is a mix of a very frustrating website, with incorrect data and not very good customer service.

To be fair, once we managed to speak to a human being, they came out within 4 hours and repaired it, the battery had gone flat. Unfortunately after a period of over a week walking up and down the stairs not sure my Mother-in-Law will be “repaired” quite so quick.

Best Bid Car Auctions Website

Wednesday, October 20th, 2010

Pool Motor Auctions has had a change of management and are now Best Bid Car Auctions.

Hooper Graphics produced the website for Pool Motor Auctions so Kevin and Joanna approached me to provide them with a website for Best Bid Car Auctions.

I was able to alter the old website to match the new logo and flyers they had had produced and they continued with the same Content Management System, as it was a system they found easy to use. This enables them to keep the website up to date every week with the latest vehicles they have in their auction.

Fake enquiry

Thursday, October 7th, 2010

I received this email the other day, and like anyone in business, was pleased to be given the opportunity to quote on a website.

However it did seem rather brief, so I decided to find out more and did a search on Google for the phone number, and found this blog entry. It seems it was a fake!

The number I am being asked to phone is a premium phone line, so you phone the number they keep you on the line for ages, it costs you a fortune and there is no work at the end of it!

Hi

I am currently looking to have a community based website built. Could you please give me a call to discuss costings. My number is 07031964651.

Many thanks

Jason Hannigan

However being on the cautious side, I replied via email first asking for more information. None reply came back, so it confirmed it was a scam.

Website for Ken Barrett

Friday, September 3rd, 2010

It’s been a pretty hectic week but the website for the artist and conceptual illustrator Ken Barrett, has just gone live.

Ken Barrett is an artist and conceptual illustrator whose work blends use of traditional forms (2D, 3D, video and performance) with opportunities for dialogue and participation. Much of it takes the form of projects that have a tendency to perforate boundaries (the religious and the secular, ‘high’ and ‘low’ culture, memory and nostalgia etc.). The website showcases his varied portfolio.

He is nearing completion of his MA in Fine Art Contemporary Practice at University College Falmouth, and they will be holding their exhibition next week.
